30-year-old Nirmala alias Nande Sodi, Deputy Commander of Poplur and Kalimela Naxal Dalam, also gave up arms in Malkangiri district on Friday. Nirmala was allegedly working for nearly 10 years for the extremist group.

A Maoist leader involved in many crimes in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, Nirmala surrendered before Deputy Inspector General of Police (South-Western Range), Sunabeda, Soumendra Priyadarshi.

Nirmala, who belongs to Kurup village in the district, was drafted as a cadre about 10 years ago, Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Aniruddha Singh said. Her husband Prabin, who was Commander of the Poplur Naxal Dalam, had surrendered before the police on April 4.

Nirmala said the Maoists have deviated from their basic ideology. Moreover, there is strong ill-feeling between the cadres of Odisha and those from outside.

Nirmala would be rehabilitated as per the package provided by the State Government for surrendered Maoists, DIG Priyadarshi said.
