US AMBASSADOR VISITS USAIDS PROJECT IN ODISHA 20/01/2012
ORISSA NEWS:

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires A. Peter Burleigh visited a project supported by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on health of the urban poor (HUP) in the Hare Krushna Nagar, Bhubaneswar.

USAID’s Health of the Urban Poor Program (HUP) is working to improve health, water, and sanitation services for poor urban communities in India by organizing women’s health groups and strengthening the ability of public health workers and community volunteers to serve their communities.

“I am pleased to be able to observe this impressive program. Its success is a testament to your hard work and commitment, which is making a positive difference in people’s lives,” said Ambassador Burleigh.

“You have spoken about the unique challenges you face as women residents here. I am impressed with your courage and hope to bring about positive change. I believe that when women organize and act, they can achieve the impossible,” he added.

The USAID HUP program works with eight Indian states (Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Bihar, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh) on state urban health programs and has demonstration sites in five cities (Pune, Bhubaneswar, Jaipur, Agra and Delhi).
