ODISHA NEWS:

The Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik demanded a package for Odisha in the 2012-13 Railway Budget for the development of railways in the State.

As per sources, the package includes proposals for enhanced provisions for ongoing projects, sanctioning of new lines, introduction of new trains, electrification, surveys, improved passenger amenities at stations, increase in frequecy of existing mail and express trains and on board.

Patnaik, in a letter to the Prime Minister and the Railway Minister, has given a long list of proposals on development of railways in the State which had been neglected by successive Union Governments.

He urged the Prime Minister to advise Ministry of Railways to take necessary steps for allocating required funds for new and ongoing projects as well as for strengthening of railway infrastructure in Odisha.

Patnaik said, his Government has planned setting up of Greenfield ports on State’s coastline which serves as the Country’s gateway to International maritime trade as well as logistics channel between the eastern and western coasts. A synchronized development plan between the ports and rail connectivity is a necessity for maximizing economic gains, he added.

The CM demanded to provide railway connectivity to all the ports, besides declaring at least three railway projects with the status of National Projects and to convert the Bhubaneswar and Puri railway station to world class stations. In addition to this, the CM urged that the eastern dedicated freight corridor from Ludhiana to Dankuni should be extended to Berhampur, so as to ensure seamless movement of freight between the ports and the northern and central hinterlands of the country.

He proposed for construction of Bharachaam Road-Talcher rail link via Malkangiri, Jeypore, Lanjigarh, Sambalpur-Berhampur new rail link via Phulbani and Rayagada-Gopalpur rail link via Bhismagiri.
