It is just March, but the mercury has started shooting up phenomenally in the State capital, making life uncomfortable. Residents in the capital city Bhubaneswar sizzled under the scorching sun as the day’s maximum temperature shot up to 41 degrees Celsius on Thursday.

As per the sources from the meteorological department the temperature is expected to rise further by a minimum of 2 degrees, in the next five days.

The heat has affected normal life in the city. The roads in city appeared deserted especially around noon. Most people preferred to remain indoors, a resident from the city said.


On the other hand, the temperature increase seems to have been a blessing in disguise for the watermelon and juice sellers. The prices of watermelons was doubled on Thursday.

“It is needless to keep an eye on rate. It is important for a person to get relief from the heat wave, said Amulya Behera, a customer who had come to buy watermelons.

“The selling of sugarcane juice has increased to Rs 3,500 per day on Thursday as compared to 2,000 per day in the last 4/5 days, said Subash Patra,” a sugar-cane juice seller.
With the temperature to increase in the coming days, the domestic animals should be prevented from going out in the sun, said Dr. S. N. Pashupalak, Deptt.of Agronomy, OUAT, Bhubaneswar.
